Response to Executive Directive 2021-8: Reducing State Purchases of Products Containing Intentionally Added PFAS

EmailThe MSU Center for PFAS Research responds to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's executive directive 2021-8.
On Oct. 27, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive directive to minimize the state’s purchases of nonessential products that contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Many unknowns still exist surrounding the toxicity and exposure routes of several of these chemicals.
At Michigan State University, we have created a collaborative research center that unites several disciplines to tackle the problem. The Center for PFAS Research brings together scientists from around the university to quantify and communicate the risks of PFAS exposure, develop remediation strategies and explore PFAS alternatives.
Our researchers have recently been awarded sizable grant funding, and our team will continue to apply for additional support. We expect to provide scientific data to support decisions surrounding the use of PFAS.
