Michigan Pear Industry Research Priorities

Not in order of preference:

  • New varieties, with emphasis on fire blight resistance, and testing for both processing and fresh market characteristics.

  • New production techniques for earlier yielding.

  • Better rootstocks with early bearing and dwarfing characteristics.

  • Better post bloom strategies for managing fire blight disease, including novel chemical combinations and timing.  Chemicals include copper, mancozeb or equivalent, mycoshield, Serenade, and Apogee

  • Improved insecticide strategies for fruit-infesting larvae without increasing psylla and mite problems.
