About the Chair

The endowed chair was established in 1979 to provide proactive leadership to the MSU dairy team and the dairy industry in the area of dairy production. It is a tenured endowed professor position with an appointment of 50% assignment in Extension and 50% research.

About Clinton E. Meadows

After serving as a tank commander Captain in the military in both World War II and Korea, Meadows received his PhD from Iowa State University He joined the Michigan State faculty in 1957 with an appointment in extension and research. Although he was trained in animal genetics, Meadows acquired expertise as a dairy cattle nutritionist. He had an uncanny knack of making the complex simple. Dairy producers loved Meadows and used his advice to greatly improve the genetics and feeding of their herds. Early in his career at Michigan State, Meadows took over the management of the  dairy herd at Kellogg Biological Station, which served as a great practical demonstration of how to increase milk production and efficiency. Meadows received numerous awards, including the Dairy Extension Award from the American Dairy Science Association, and was placed in the National Dairy Shrine's Hall of fame in 1995. He retired from Michigan State in 1978 but continued to advise MABC/Select Sires for many years. The money donated by the dairy industry to support the endowed chair was named in his honor in 1979. He died in East Lansing in 2003 at the age of 89.
