The Complete Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Certificate Training is a three-day course that focuses on understanding the relationship between the physical environment and criminal opportunities. Participants will be introduced to theories on crimes and offender’s decision-making process in relation to the physical environment and principles of CPTED.

Instruction will be a combination of lectures, in-class exercises/assessments, and a field assessment.  Specifically, the training will contain the following:

Lectures

  • Theories in criminology (Rational Choice Theory, Routine Activity Theory, Situational Crime Prevention).
  • CPTED background/principles (surveillance, access, territoriality, and maintenance).
  • Color Psychology/materials.
  • Traffic calmers.
  • Terror mitigation.
  • Use of art.
  • Public restrooms.
  • Use of charrettes in community engagement to reduce crime.

In-class exercises

Participants will work in small groups to review site plans (e.g., parks, schools, emergency departments, and apartment complexes). Each group will have one hour to assess the plan using CPTED principles and develop practical recommendations for improvement.

Case Studies

Bank robberies, convenience stores, car theft, residential homes, emergency departments/hospitals, schools, university buildings, parks, and houses of worship.

Field Project

Participants will work in small groups (assigned on Day 1). Each group will select one site to assess and will present findings on Day 3.

A PowerPoint presentation template will be provided.

Final Exam

A multiple-choice final exam is required to successfully complete the training.

Prerequisite

No prerequisite is required.

How to Register

Registration is available online via the MSU Cashnet system. Select the Register button. The Zoom meeting ID and passcode will be shared with participants via a confirmation email after registering.

Workshop Cancellation: Michigan State University (MSU) reserves the right to cancel a training unless adequate registrations are received 14 days prior to the event. Do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until notified that the course is confirmed.

Request for Cancellation: If you cancel within seven business days before the training, your refund will be less a 20% processing fee. Cancellations less than three business days prior to the program will result in no refund being given. If a registrant cannot attend, rather than canceling they may send a substitute without accruing a fee or penalty.
