When the Spanish arrived in 1490-1519, they discovered native inhabitants like the Aztecs and others all ate some sort of bread made from maize (corn). The Spanish Conquistadors quickly spread news of this strange new bread. It wasn't long before wheat was brought over to the New World from Spain and the birth of flour tortillas happened.
