Global Food Systems Research Seminar: Dr. Kajal Gulati

September 3, 2025

Room 75, Ag Hall

The Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics (AFRE) and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) will host the first Global Food Systems Research Seminar on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. in Room 75, Ag Hall.

Dr. Kajal Gulati (AFRE) will present “Impact of Agricultural Policies on Crop Residue Burning in India.” In the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, large-scale burning of crop residue contributes significantly to seasonal air pollution. Since 2015, federal and state governments have implemented subsidies, incentives, and penalties to reduce burning. Using a synthetic control method, Dr. Gulati’s research finds these policies have not significantly reduced fires, falling far short of what is needed to improve air quality. The findings point to the need for new, economically informed policy approaches to address environmental externalities.

The Global Food Systems Research Seminar Series will be held on the first Wednesday of each month, featuring speakers on global agriculture and food system challenges.
