A finale conversation featuring Daniel Safarik (Council on Vertical Urbanism), Eric Karsh (Equilibrium Consulting), and Dean Maltz (Shigeru Ban Architects), exploring tall timber and its role in the future of architecture. Moderated by Ben Ridderbos, (ROSSETTI Architects).

- Daniel Safarik is Director, Research and Thought Leadership and Editor-in-Chief at the Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU). His responsibilities include providing high-level directional oversight for the Council’s research functions, data studies, topical publications, and dedicated tall building database. Additional responsibilities include the development of content for CTBUH publications, including Vertical Urbanism Magazine, and conferences.
- Eric Karsh is the founding partner of Equilibrium, a globally recognized leader in timber engineering and construction since 1998, with offices in Vancouver, Atlanta, and Paris. With over 35 years of experience as a structural engineer, Eric has played a pivotal role in shaping the international timber industry. His portfolio includes numerous landmark, award-winning projects, such as the Wood Innovation and Design Centre in British Columbia, Mass Timber One (MT1)—Google’s first mass timber office building, located in Sunnyvale, California, and the Créteil Schoolboard office building in Paris, France. Renowned for his innovative design approach and dedication to sustainable construction, Eric has received international recognition for advancing environmentally responsible building practices. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers (UK) and a part owner of BC Passive House, a leader in the prefabrication of wood-based, high-performance building systems.
- Dean Maltz, AIA, is a managing partner at Shigeru Ban Architects, an international firm with a more than 30-year legacy of wood innovation. Maltz is responsible for all SBA projects in North and South America. Most notably, he led the AIA National Honor Award-winning Aspen Art Museum (2014), the Nomadic Museum (2005), Metal Shutter House (2011), and Cast Iron House (2021). He also oversees the design of Kentucky Owl Park distillery and a 13-story condominium in Miami. Maltz is a licensed architect in eight U.S. states.

Ben Ridderbos AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Partner | Architecture, is an accomplished leader known for delivering innovative, high-performance architecture and engineering projects across North America and the Caribbean. With over 30 years of experience, he specializes in higher education and mixed-use urban developments that seamlessly blend community, residential, educational and commercial spaces into vibrant, enduring destinations. Passionate about environmentally responsible design, Ben has contributed significantly to Mass Timber and Living Building Challenge projects. His deep expertise in construction, technology, and sustainability enables him to craft solutions that are both visually compelling and highly functional.
