Cass River Lake Sturgeon Release

- What: Release young lake sturgeon into the Cass River in partnership with the Saginaw Bay Sturgeon Restoration
Be a part of one of Saginaw Bay's greatest restoration success stories. Help release young Lake Sturgeon into the Cass River as part of an effort to restore this fish to the Saginaw River system. Attendees will reintroduce around 100 Lake Sturgeon. This event takes place at the parking lot at the Gunzenhausen Walkway in Frankenmuth and is hosted by the City of Frankenmuth.
These young sturgeon come from the Black River in Cheboygan County. They hatched in the river as a result of natural reproduction. In late May 2026, researchers from the Michigan State University Department of Fisheries & Wildlife and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources moved the fish to the Black Lake Streamside Rearing Facility for safekeeping.
There is no-cost to participate, and you do not need to pre-register for release events. We just encourage you to be on time — or a little early to explore the education materials and connect with others about Lake Sturgeon. We begin each event by sharing instructions and then releasing the fish individually into the river.
