Brush up on your tree identification skills and forest forensics with this forest sampling session at West Scio Preserve. Ecologists Jacqueline Courteau and Anna Cone will lead participants through a review of key woody plants (trees, shrubs, and vines) and point out how to look for clues to land use history. Then we’ll work in groups to learn basic forest plot sampling techniques to describe and monitor forest species composition and predict successional trajectories. Be prepared to encounter ticks and mosquitoes and to walk off trail (wear long pants and close-toed shoes). Bring a water bottle and snack if needed.

This event will take place rain or shine, so please plan to dress for the weather.

This event is sponsored by the Michigan Conservation Stewards Program and the Michigan Naturalist Program. This program is open to all. Participants need not be an alumni of either program in order to participate.

Registration is $5/participant. Register by Thursday, June 5th. Pre-registration is REQUIRED.
