Join us at the MSU Horticulture Gardens Houseplant and Succulent Sale VIP Party on Nov 5 and build a healthy, self-sustaining bioactive terrarium. You’ll design and assemble your terrarium using specially formulated terrarium substrate, a variety of plants, natural elements, and decorative accents. Proceeds benefit students attending HRT Study Abroad.
Your Ticket Includes
- 2-quart glass container with lid (see photo above)
- Drainage layer and barrier fabric
- Bioactive substrate
- Live plant cuttings and moss
- Three decorative items including: resin figurines, crystal mushrooms, and natural accents.
- Bioactive cleanup crew
- Advice and take-home care instructions from Hort Dept faculty
Keys to Terrarium Success
- Drainage layer- because happy roots don’t like wet feet!
- Specially formulated terrarium substrate- providing balanced moisture, aeration, and nutrients.
- The right plants- because not every plant belongs in a terrarium! Our curated plant selection thrives in the unique conditions of a miniature, enclosed ecosystem. Minor and infrequent pruning may be required.
- A bioactive cleanup crew- meet the springtails, your tiny terrarium caretakers that help keep your ecosystem clean, balanced, and thriving. These are optional, but highly recommended.
- Lighting and Aftercare Instructions- we’ll help you find the perfect location for your terrarium at home or in your workplace. A detailed take-home FAQ/Care Guide is provided.
Important Notes
- Requires VIP Party admission (either by purchasing a VIP Party ticket, or with current garden membership)
- Terrarium Bar tickets must be redeemed during the VIP party (Nov 5, 2026, 4:00-7:00 PM), with entry to the terrarium bar concluding at ~6:40 PM.
- Take-home terrarium kits will not be provided.
