Job Title: Field Inspector / Crop Scout

Location: Central Michigan

Qualifications/Education: Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an ag-related program. Open to all classes, Freshman through Senior.

AgQuest Consulting Services is offering a paid internship for a student pursuing a career in agriculture who is looking to gain hands on experience in agronomy. Day to day tasks will include crop scouting, real-world agronomic decision making, data collection/reporting and working 1 on 1 with the lead agronomist. You will also have the opportunity to meet with clients of AgQuest, industry reps, and other professionals in the industry throughout the course of your internship as well.

We are looking for an individual who has strong observational skills and is very detail oriented! You will work “remotely” but will be expected to arrive at the fields at a certain time each day, work closely with the lead agronomist, and work longer hours if needed. No weekend work required.

Requirements:

  • Strong interest in agronomy, crop production and field-based agriculture
  • Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to walk long distances through fields and/or uneven terrain
  • Willingness to learn and ask questions
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle w/ 4WD

Duration:

  • May through end of August

Compensation:

  • Competitive hourly rate, with a guaranteed bonus once internship has been completed!
  • *Mileage pay for personal vehicle use*

Primary Responsibilities: (Training provided)

  • Conduct weekly in-field scouting visits for various crops (corn, soys, wheat, beets, cucumbers, dry beans, etc)
  • Identify and document weeds, insects, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and crop stress
  • Take stand counts, determine plant populations, determine growth stages, etc.
  • Accurately record findings using digital tools such as mobile apps, GPS, photo w/ geo reference, spreadsheets, etc
  • Communicate observations clearly to the lead agronomist
  • Follow all safety protocols and practices while in the field

What Should You Expect?

  • On average you should expect to work around 40 hours per week, peak of the season you could expect a few 10 hour days as needed
  • Hours may vary based on weather conditions
  • Exposure to professional agronomy tools and technology
