Ecological Restoration & Native Landscape Field Supervisor (Foreman)
Role Summary
The Ecological Restoration & Native Landscape Supervisor (Foreman) leads field crews in the installation and long-term
management of high-diversity ecological landscapes. This role bridges the gap between ecology and hands-on
horticultural execution. You will oversee invasive species control, erosion control and revegetation, including
construction and maintenance of rain gardens, bioswales, and native prairies while ensuring strict adherence to
environmental conditions and safety standards. Your role is vital to the day-to-day field performance of NCS native
landscape and habitat restoration sites.
Primary Responsibilities
• Materials & Equipment Loading/Transport: Direct daily workflows for site mobilization.
• Field Crew Leadership: Manage crews of 3–8 technicians. Direct daily workflows for native seeding,
plugs/potted plant installation, and reforestation projects.
• Green Infrastructure Installation: Lead the physical construction of rain gardens and bioswales, including soil
amendment, fine grading, and the installation of specialized drainage components (e.g., overflow structures,
basins).
• Ecosystem Management: Oversee invasive species control programs using integrated pest management (IPM)
strategies, including targeted herbicide application and mechanical removal. Winter work includes chainsaw,
brush-hogging and basal treatment operations.
• Project Interpretation: Translate landscape architectural plans and ecological restoration specifications into
actionable field tasks. Ensure proper "Right Plant, Right Place" placement based on hydric zones.
• Maintenance & Monitoring: Supervise post-installation care, including specialized weeding (distinguishing
native seedlings from invasives), cutting/pruning, and monitoring plant health
• Equipment & Logistics: Operate and maintain a fleet of equipment including skid steers, tractors (with Harley
rakes or seeders), mini-excavators, UTVs with sprayers, and water tanks
• Mapping, Safety & Compliance: Lead tailgate meetings with map review. Enforce Health, Safety, Security, and
Environment (HSSE) protocols. Work with engineers,
Technical Qualifications
• Education/Experience: High School Diploma, with Degree in Ecology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or
Landscape Architecture preferred; or 5+ years of equivalent field restoration/landscape experience, including
leadership).
• Native Plant Expertise: Expert-level identification of both native and invasive species across various growth
stages (seedling to mature, woody and herbaceous).
Soil/Water Knowledge: Working knowledge of hydrology, shoreline and slope erosive forces, soil types and how
bioswales and other native landscape features function to manage runoff/sediment etc.
• GIS Competence: Knowledge, skill and ability to spatially analyze maps of large sites, input data into ArcGIS
FieldMaps and willingness to learn ArcGIS online, Bluebeam, other software, etc.
• Landscape/Restoration Technical Skills: Minimum of 3+ years of ecological restoration leadership experience
with a strong grasp of planting plans, environmental standards (E&S, IPM, invasive management), and
prescribed burn, seeding, SESC, and maintenance operations. Proficiency in operating trucks (with trailers),
UTVs, brush cutters, augers, chainsaws, skid steers, tractors, and sprayers. Strong background in identifying and
executing equipment maintenance needs and procedures, with a proactive approach to minimizing downtime.
Ability to mix and apply herbicides correctly and safely manage invasive species programs, with valid
Commercial Pesticide Applicator License.
• Licenses & Certifications:
o Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Aquatic & Natural Areas categories).
o NWCG S-130/S-190 (for prescribed fire/burn operations – preferred, not required).
o Valid Driver’s License (Class A or B CDL or Chauffeurs preferred for hauling machinery).
Physical & Travel Requirements
• Ability to work 10+ hour days in outdoor conditions (heat, rain, rough terrain). Note work is accomplished 90%+
in a field setting, with daily project manager communications, and relevant record-keeping. Minor office time to
review emails, plans and maps can be expected monthly.
• Capability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. repeatedly (e.g., ECB, stone, mulch, balled-trees).
• Willingness to travel to project sites – mostly local
