A Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Research Assistantship (RA) is available in the School of Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) under the supervision of Dr. John Tracy. The RA will develop and lead research projects related to assessing the functions of natural and restored bottomland hardwood (BLH) forest ecosystems in the southeastern United States. This includes studying the impact of biotic and abiotic stressors on BLH forest species and investigating management alternatives that maximize BLH forest services. Focus should be applied to functions and services that are valued by modern forest markets and conservation easement programs (e.g., carbon storage, biogeochemical cycling, timber, wildlife, etc.). The RA will be encouraged to utilize remote sensing applications, field-based studies, controlled experiments, and other appropriate methodologies. Opportunities exist to collaborate with faculty in the LSU AgCenter and other universities, state and federal agencies, and industrial and non-industrial private landowners.


Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry or a related field and meet the admission requirements of the LSU Graduate School. They must have solid quantitative skills and knowledge of forest ecology. The successful candidate should exhibit an aptitude for oral and written communication. They will be expected to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals and to present at professional conferences. Prior experience with remote sensing technologies, GIS, statistical analysis (R/Python), experimental design, forest inventory, soil assays, and data management are preferred.

Financial support is available for two (M.S.) or four (Ph.D.) years starting in the Spring of 2026, including a competitive annual stipend, tuition support, and health insurance (offered).
