Compensation: The hourly rate for this position ranges from $25.00 to $27.00, depending on experience and qualifications.
Position Summary: Primarily responsible for the Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden, while also contributing to other horticultural areas as needed. Performs all duties associated with design, maintenance, and care of collections ensuring high-quality display presentation and plant health. Manages day-to-day tasks, including plant care and volunteer coordination and assists with horticulture exhibition changeovers. Works under the direction of the Lead Horticulturist to maintain the integrity of the Japanese Garden aesthetic, emphasizing precision, attention to detail, and adherence to the original design intent.
Essential Functions
- Perform a wide range of plant care and maintenance tasks essential for the preservation, protection and transplanting of existing plants in assigned areas. Responsibilities include but are not limited to soil preparation, planting, pruning, mulching, weeding, watering, fertilization, irrigation, pesticide application, and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies
- Develop and install horticultural displays: plan, design, select material, place orders, and keep records
- Keep tool storage areas, carts, and other equipment clean, organized, and free of clutter
- Lead and direct the work of others, including seasonal staff and volunteers, to complete general projects
- Work with staff to complete projects in other garden areas
- Work at height (ex. on ladders and in lifts)
- Remove compost and properly place materials for recycling
- Remove snow from paths and roadways; reporting early or staying late and on weekends and holidays as needed
- Lead public engagement initiatives, such as workshops, presentations, and guided tours
- Provide content and insights for marketing, communications, and social media, especially as it relates to horticultural content and concepts
- A flexible and collaborative culture is important. Other duties may be assigned within the department as well as across the organization.
- Ability to wear Garden-issued Personal Protective Equipment
- Flexibility in scheduling, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and on-call shifts for snow removal
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Horticulture Manager.
Education and / or Qualifications preferred:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Biology, Botany and/or related field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of (2-3) years hands-on, relevant horticulture work experience.
- Skills/Knowledge/Licenses:
- Excellent working knowledge of plant materials and maintenance techniques.
- Proficient in operating various landscaping tools and equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) for record-keeping and communication.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Michigan Pesticide Applicator License
- Valid Michigan driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Working Conditions: Basic mobility is expected in offices, grounds, and exhibition areas. Ability to observe details at close range and communicate information accurately with others. Engage in occasional object manipulation with or without assistance, and efficiently navigate the workspace to access essential resources. Ability to regularly move up to 20 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move 100+ pounds (i.e., load, unload, and move supplies, medium to heavy weight tools, and equipment). Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder. Regularly operates in outdoor and challenging weather conditions, including exposure to temperatures exceeding 100°F and dropping below 0°F, rain, high humidity, snow, and direct sunlight. This encompasses both outdoor settings and greenhouse environments. May entail exposure to various workplace hazards such as hazardous materials, loud noise, and extreme heat/cold.
