Laboratory Research Technician

We have an excellent opportunity for a Laboratory Research Technician in our DeWitt, MI location. This is your

Primary position duties include:
• Identify and quantify soil nematodes.
• PCR identification and genotyping of potato disease.
• Running samples for sugar content in sugar beets.
• Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing
experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.
• Keep lab and materials clean. Inspecting and maintaining all lab equipment as required.
• Adhere to all safety regulations and USDA APHIS permit regulations.
• Contribute to field trials by collecting soil samples, planting crops, and maintaining trial plots.
• Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
• Support members with collection of data.
• Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports.
• Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Order lab supplies and maintain
inventory.
• Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
• Gather data to present to growers/industry professionals.
• Analyzing historical data and recognizing trends.
• Keep informed of new lab techniques.
• Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
• Occasional out of state travel to conferences and client farms, speaking with current and potential clients.
Qualified candidates must have:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in crop and soil science, nematology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular
biology or a related scientific field with 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.
• Experience with spreadsheets, ordering, budget management.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Microsoft Word
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to effectively incorporate feedback.
• Licensure: None Required.
Preferred experience:
• Experience in crop and soil science and nematology.

Physical Demands:
• This position can spend extensive periods of time standing while conducting analysis.
• Also requires keyboarding and other bench work requiring fine finger manipulation.
• Routinely stoops and bends.
• Routinely reaches and grasps with arms and hands above head.
• Occasionally lifts, pushes and/or carries objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
• Walking in fields with uneven ground.
Work Hours & Benefits:
• Base Wage: Starting $22-24 per hour, bonuses are available
• Winter- 4 days per week
• Summer- 5-6 days per week, 40-50 hours per week
• Paid vacation between Christmas and New year
• Paid holidays if it falls on a regular work day
• One week off paid vacation in the summer after 90 days of employment, not to be taken during the months of
May and September.
