Description:

The MSU Irrigation Lab (Dr. Younsuk Dong's lab) is seeking an undergraduate research assistant to work full time during the Summer of 2026 (May to August). Previous experience is not required. The MSU Irrigation Lab is currently running projects on irrigation efficiency and improving crop growth in corn and soybean operations through integrated water, plant, and soil management using IoT-based sensor technologies. Students may create or be provided with a small, personal research project within their field of interest.

Successful applicants will support field and lab activities in MSU research farms and commercial operations across Michigan. Responsibilities include assisting with irrigation system setting, testing, pressure and flow measurements, sensor installation and data monitoring, and water and soil sampling.

Research assistants will gain hands-on experience with precision irrigation tools, sensor technology, and collaboration with growers and industry partners while mentored by graduate students and staff. Additional duties include water and soil sampling, analysis, and data entry. 

Qualifications:

  • Interest in agricultural irrigation systems and water management. 
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Comfortable navigating uneven terrain and outdoor conditions while carrying equipment (up to 30 lbs). 
  • Willingness to travel to field sites with the research team. 

Starting Pay: $16/hour.

Schedule: 40 hours/week expectations. Monday–Friday, typically 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (schedule may vary based on field needs). 

Location: Lab located in 126 Farrall Hall, from which we travel to farm locations within Michigan.
