Potato Field Scout Internship
We are seeking students to aid and assist in our potato scouting and consulting activities. The position will be based out of Dewitt, Mi, however scouts will not need to report to the office every day, since they will be traveling around portions of the state to complete activities. The position will include ample training, but the candidates will mostly be working on their own.
Responsibilities will include:
- Learning growth stages, pests, and general farming practices for potatoes
- Monitoring fields to identify and quantify
- Insects
- Weeds
- Diseases
- Nutrient deficiencies
- And any other detrimental aspects of the field
- Recording data collected in the field
- Creating useful reports, based on observations and data collected
- Collecting soil, leaf tissue, and petiole samples
- Maintaining company vehicle
- Helping the crop research team at the research farms, from time to time, when needed
Ideal candidates should be able to:
- Work outside, stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods
- Operate an ATV
- Walk uneven fields
- Work independently while following directions
- Communicate regularly with co-workers
- Ask meaningful questions
- Have a good work ethic
- Be punctual and willing to work
- Function as a team player
- Be interested or enrolled in agricultural studies
- Have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
Starting pay is competitive with sign on and end of the season bonuses. Interns will be expected to work 40-50 hours per week, 4-5 days each week. Employees may be asked to work one weekend day during planting/harvest season. We will work to accommodate your summer school schedule.
