MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY SOIL FERTILITY and PLANT NUTRITION RESEARCH PROGRAM: We don’t just work fertilizers and nutrients, we make fertilizers and nutrients BETTER. Can microbes applied to fertilizer granules, the soil, or to the plant enhance nutrient uptake or substitute for applied nutrients? Can nitrogen be made more available later into the growing season and improve nutrient efficiency? Can we produce more nutrient-dense grain for better human nutrition? How can nutrient efficiency be improved? Excellent opportunity to gain understanding of both plant and soil nutrition. Student duties include: field research preparation, equipment calibration, soil and plant tissue diagnostics, exposure to new, existing, and experimental fertilizer sources/products and application strategies, soil/plant sampling and preparation, assist with current graduate student field research, and gain valuable research experience in corn, soybean, wheat, sugar beet, potato, and dry edible bean cropping systems.  Most activities outdoors.
