Smithsonian Gardens (SG) provides an array of learning experiences through its internship program thanks to the wide diversity of services and programs it offers at the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex. Interns will learn skills in a broad range of public garden endeavors from professional staff that can provide a strong practical background to emerging horticulture, archives, landscape architecture, and education professionals.

Stipends and Expenses

A stipend is available for internship positions.

Interns must pay for their own travel, housing, and subsistence during the period of the internship.

Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in a college or university program or recently graduated from one.

Available internship projects may have additional requirements. Please see the individual project descriptions for more information.

Selection is based on both an evaluation of the applicant’s application and available positions.

Application Process

  1. To apply for an internship with Smithsonian Gardens, fill out an online application using the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment system (SOLAA) 
  2. Select “Smithsonian Gardens” from the drop-down Office/Museum/Research Center list.
  3. The application must include:
    • an online application
    • two letters of recommendation
    • an unofficial college transcript(s)
    • an essay statement of interest describing the applicant’s background, interest in the field, career goals and chosen internship project. Additional information may also be required for select internships (see internship descriptions).

Internship projects, schedules, and other parameters vary based on a variety of factors and are determined by staff mentor and prospective candidate at the time of interview or selection. Some departments offer internships only at particular times.
