Michigan 4-H, a program of Michigan State University Extension, helps young people discover their passions, build valuable life and leadership skills, form meaningful relationships, and gain the confidence and experience needed to thrive in school, careers and communities. Through hands-on learning and support from caring adults, youth develop the skills and mindset needed to become successful, engaged leaders both now and in the future.
But what does that look like in practice? Here are 10 ways Michigan 4-H helps young people grow, learn, lead and prepare for the future.
1. Builds leadership skills
Leadership is woven throughout the 4-H experience. Members take on club officer roles, serve on committees, mentor younger youth, speak in front of groups, and lead community service projects. Through these experiences, young people learn how to guide teams, communicate effectively, and inspire others. Research shows that 4-H participants are twice as likely to aspire to leadership roles as their peers.
2. Develops real-world life skills
No matter their project area, 4-H members gain practical skills they can use throughout their lives. Whether raising livestock, managing a project budget, planning an event or building a robot, youth strengthen skills such as:

Provides hands-on learning experiences
Michigan 4-H uses a "learn-by-doing" approach that engages youth in active, experiential learning. 4. Helps youth discover their passions
One of the most powerful aspects of 4-H is helping young people find their "spark"—the interests and activities that excite and motivate them. From animal science and agriculture to coding, engineering, entrepreneurship, cooking, arts, outdoor recreation and leadership, 4-H offers opportunities to explore a wide variety of interests and uncover new possibilities.
5. Increases college and career readiness
Michigan 4-H helps prepare youth for future education and careers by offering opportunities for career exploration, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, workforce preparation and professional networking. Participants build valuable workplace skills such as resume development, communication, career planning and professional relationship-building.

As youth set goals, complete projects, take on leadership roles and overcome challenges, they develop confidence in their abilities and a greater sense of independence. Giving back is a cornerstone of the 4-H experience. Members learn to identify needs within their communities and work collaboratively to make a positive difference. National research shows that 4-H participants are three times more likely to participate in community service than their peers, helping them develop a lifelong commitment to civic engagement.

Positive relationships with caring adults play a vital role in youth development. Michigan 4-H is supported by thousands of trained volunteers who serve as club leaders, project experts, coaches and mentors. These trusted adults provide encouragement, guidance and support that help young people grow and succeed.
9. Creates friendships and a sense of belonging
4-H brings together youth from rural, suburban and urban communities across Michigan. Through clubs, camps, fairs, workshops and statewide events, members build lasting friendships, learn from diverse perspectives and become part of a welcoming and supportive community where they feel they belong.
