Agribusiness management student follows her love for agriculture

Michigan State University (MSU) undergraduate student Kaddi Gewirtz knew she would pursue a career in the agriculture industry. That’s what led her to the agribusiness management program in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics. This major gives students the flexibility to choose courses related to individual interests in farm management, commodity procurement and marketing, labor and personnel management, public policy and global food issues.
“I selected agribusiness as my major simply because my passion is agriculture. I enjoy the agronomy and business sides of this industry,” she said. “I have hopes to work in an agronomy, sales and marketing-based job where I work with growers to assist them in making the best efficient, economical and influential decision for their farm.”
Gewirtz is majoring in agribusiness management with a double minor in agronomy and food industry management. Prior to graduation, her goal is to have secured a full-time position with an agro-science company with a long-term goal of establishing her own farm, while working as territory manager. Her past experiences working on a family-owned cash crop farm provided learning experiences and a passion for the industry.
Gewirtz serves as secretary for the MSU Agronomy Club and is also active with Michigan State Farm Bureau and MSU Sigma Alpha-Gamma chapter, serving as sisterhood committee chair and beta omicron class president. Gewirtz is also a Shiawassee County 4-H alumna and was named the 2018 Michigan 4-H Animal Science Sportsperson of the Year.
Additionally, Gewirtz is one of the 2021 CANR Alumni Association Scholarship recipients.

Why did you choose your major and why MSU?
I selected agribusiness as my major simply because my passion is agriculture. I enjoy the agronomy and business sides of this industry.
Who or what inspired your interest in the major you selected?
My passion for agriculture made it clear I would study agriculture in college, but I had a hard time deciding what I truly wanted to study. My mentor Tim Kiesling influenced me to choose agribusiness management so I would have a wide range of opportunities upon graduation.
What has been one of your best experiences within your major so far?
The agriculture career fairs are always a great experience for me. It’s a great event to network with so many companies about internships and full-time positions.
What do you want others to know about this major?
The opportunities are endless. My friends have a wide range of passions and interests within agriculture. I personally prefer the agronomy side, although some of my friends prefer the finance or animal side of the industry. This major truly sets you up for success in all factors of the agriculture industry.
What are some of the best things about being an MSU student?
Without a doubt, the people. My professors truly care about my success and are willing to meet with me to discuss any problems I may have. My advisors are extremely helpful with trying to decide schedules, adding minors and answering questions along the way.
Any thoughts or advice for current or new students?
If you have even the smallest interest in something, DO IT! Your college career is a very small part of your life, so if you want to join a club or work a certain job, do it!
What are your future plans?
I have hopes to work in an agronomy, sales and marketing-based job where I work with growers to assist them in making the best efficient, economical and influential decisions for their farms.
