Kate Balgoyen, of the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, will receive the 2025 CANR Early Achievement Award on May 8.

The Early Achievement Award recognizes a support staff member who is a dedicated team player and has made outstanding contributions in their role and has recently joined CANR.

Kate Balgoyen is an office assistant in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. Since joining the department, Balgoyen has wholeheartedly embraced the departmental and university community, making a significant impact through her positive demeanor and creative problem-solving skills.

One nominator shared a memorable example of Kate's enthusiasm: "A few weeks ago, Kate spontaneously (to my delighted surprise) led my 100-level biosystems engineering course in a rousing 'Go Green! Go White!' (at 9am!). It was definitely not in her job description, but Kate seized a moment to have a positive impact on building community with our new students."

Balgoyen's caring nature extends beyond her official duties. Another nominator highlighted her support for students, particularly those from underrepresented groups: "She exudes a positive and holistic caring for students. This has included being aware when a potential student from an underrepresented group needed support to navigate 'bumps' in the admission process, and providing that support quietly and gladly."

Her warm personality fosters a welcoming atmosphere that benefits not only new students but the entire department. Her contributions have been instrumental in building a supportive community that prioritizes student success and well-being.
