In today’s increasingly polarized society and high-stress workplaces, knowing how to communicate through conflict is more important than ever. Learning to handle interpersonal tension with clarity and care is essential to maintaining positive relationships, whether at work, in community settings, or at home. Michigan State University Extension offers “Communicating Through Conflict” workshops to help people develop the interpersonal skills needed to navigate conflict competently and constructively.

These engaging, interactive online workshops offer tools and techniques for recognizing what drives conflict, slowing conversations to reduce emotional responses, and creating a safe space for continued dialogue. Participants will gain hands-on experience in active and generous listening, learn to identify the interests behind strongly held positions, and practice giving and receiving feedback in ways that reduce defensiveness.

Due to the focused, interactive nature of the online program, participants are asked to fully engage for the entire two-hour session without phone calls, meetings, or other interruptions, as these can diminish the learning experience for all. You will apply what you've learned in breakout sessions within a safe and supportive environment. No recording will be available following the session, so live participation is essential.

Workshops are offered twice in 2025:

The cost of each session is $50, with a limited number of need-based scholarships available upon request. In recognition of Military Family Appreciation Month, veterans may attend the November session for free.

Participants also receive a helpful handout summarizing the steps and strategies learned during the workshop, making it easier to apply these skills in real-life situations.
