Dr. Mark Axelrod is an Associate Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources with a joint appointment in the James Madison College here at MSU. His research focuses on environmental governance and law, including exploration of how policy makers respond to scientific uncertainty.
Dr. Axelrod contributes to the Center for PFAS Research by attempting to understand what information decision makers need in order to assess and respond to PFAS threats and risks. He also studies how threats and risks differentially impact various social groups (e.g., by gender, race, and/or socioeconomic status). Mark has conducted similar research on high seas tuna fisheries governance, exploring conditions under which policy makers adopt or avoid scientific advice.
Mark also co-leads the Michigan chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network, helping connect researchers with community leaders, media, and policy actors. He is on the Editorial Board of Global Environmental Politics journal, and Board of Contributors for the International Environmental Agreements Database.
