Effective communication is one of the most valuable skills in today’s world—whether in school, at work or in everyday life. Strong communication skills are essential for success in interviews, teamwork and leadership roles. According to the Michigan State University Career Services Network, the National Association of Colleges and Employers career readiness competencies include communications and the ability to:

  • Employ active listening, persuasion and influencing skills.
  • Communicate in a clear and organized manner so that others can effectively understand.
  • Ask appropriate questions for specific information from supervisors and others.

Why do communications skills matter? Think about it in relation to the following:

Career success

  • Employers consistently rank communication as one of the top career readiness competencies. It’s essential for interviews, teamwork, leadership and networking.
  • Strong communicators can articulate ideas clearly, influence decisions, and build professional relationships.

Academic achievement

  • Individuals who communicate effectively can collaborate better on group projects, ask clarifying questions, and present ideas confidently.
  • It helps with writing, speaking and active listening—skills that improve overall learning.

Personal relationships

  • Good communication fosters trust and understanding in friendships, social settings and family relationships.
  • It reduces conflicts and helps resolve misunderstandings quickly.

Leadership and influence

  • Leaders rely on communication to inspire, motivate and guide teams.
  • Persuasion and negotiation skills are rooted in effective communication.

Problem-solving and critical thinking

  • Asking the right questions and listening actively are key to identifying issues and finding solutions.
  • Clear communication ensures everyone understands goals and expectations.

Adaptability in diverse settings

  • In a global and multicultural world, communication helps bridge cultural differences and may enhance collaboration.
  • Understanding personality differences makes interactions smoother and more productive.

Confidence and self-advocacy

  • Being able to express your needs and ideas clearly boosts confidence.
  • It empowers individuals to advocate for themselves in school, work and life.

These competencies are not just for professionals; they are critical for individuals preparing for, or in, the world of work. Communication is more than words, it’s about connection. We should work on becoming the most effective communicator and leader possible.
