Exploring the Potential of Open-Pollinated Corn at KBS
Wrapping up the final season of this colorful project
At this year’s Food-Grade Grains Field Day held at the Kellogg Biological Station (KBS), research assistant Lorato Wood (Singh Lab) shared exciting updates on her study of open-pollinated corn varieties. Wood is part of a team investigating 21 different corn varieties grown across three locations in Michigan, including KBS; 2025 is the final season at all 3 locations.
"We hope to better understand the agronomic traits and distilling potential of these diverse, open-pollinated varieties—offering insight into their suitability for food-grade and value-added markets," Wood said. This research not only supports sustainable and diversified farming practices but also opens doors for farmers and producers interested in locally adapted specialty grains. Read more here
