The FCCP has launched the third installment of our Landowner Resource Hub, focused on Voluntary Carbon Markets. This new page aims to improve understanding of how voluntary carbon markets operate, as well as increase awareness about key challenges and opportunities facing markets. The new page also seeks to increase landowner understanding of available carbon programs, pointing to a variety of different programs.

The new page points to state resources, such as the Department of Natural Resources’ Qualified Forest Program that encourages sustainable management of forests in exchange for preferential tax treatment. Additionally, we point to carbon programs targeted at landowners holding various amounts of land, such as the Family Forest Carbon Program, LandYield, and Forest Carbon Works.

Other helpful resources include webinar series from the MSU FCCP and Forest Economics and Resource Management Lab that outline how the voluntary market operates, as well as key challenges and research opportunities to increase credit integrity. Resources from the University of Wisconsin Extension and Penn State Forest Owner Carbon and Climate Education (FOCCE) program provide additional context surrounding carbon markets and credit creation.

This new addition to the Landowner Resource Hub builds off the previously released “Carbon and Climate Science” and “Land Management” pages, adding the carbon market angle into the existing base of knowledge.
