MSU Extension is excited to announce a free, four-week Master Composter webinar series beginning May 6, 2025. This educational program is designed for gardeners, sustainability advocates, educators and anyone interested in deepening their understanding of composting and its many benefits.
Throughout the four sessions, participants will explore the MSU Master Composter curriculum in a structured, accessible online format. Each weekly session will cover two chapters, with topics ranging from composting basics to yard waste reduction and soil health.
At the end of the series, participants will have the opportunity to complete the optional MSU Extension Master Composter Certification Exam, all from the comfort of home.

- May 6, 11:00 a.m . – Chapters 1 - 2: Composting Introductions and Basics
Get started with the foundations of composting—what it is, how it works, and why it’s so important. - May 13, 11:00 a.m. – Chapters 3 - 4: Composting Methods and Vermicomposting
Explore a range of composting systems, including backyard piles, manure management and composting with worms. - May 20, 11:00 a.m. – Chapters 5 - 6: Soil, Compost Benefits and Use
Discover how compost improves soil structure, supports plant health and contributes to environmental sustainability. - May 27, 11:00 a.m. – Chapters 7 - 8: Yard Waste Reduction, Policies and Regulations, and Certification Completion
Learn how to manage organic waste efficiently and prepare to take the virtual certification exam.
All sessions are free and hosted online via Zoom. Whether you're a beginner or looking to become a certified Master Composter and advance your understanding of compost best practices, this series offers valuable insight and practical knowledge. As a part of this 4-week webinar series, it is also encouraged of participants to complete the virtual learning modules for the Master Composter course. Participants can create their log in for those modules HERE. If you can’t make it to the May series, future monthly cohorts for June, July and August are in development and will be announced soon.
