Gladwin hosts training for nine new MSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension held a training for nine recent graduates of the Foundations of Gardening course who were interested in taking the next steps to become MSU Extension Master Gardener (EMG) volunteers. They are now fully accepted EMG trainees and able to start their volunteering efforts across several central and northern counties of Michigan, joining more than 2,000 MSU EMG volunteers already in service across the state.
The new volunteers completed the first step in the process by completing the online 10-week MSU Extension Foundations of Gardening course and passing the final exam. Their passion for gardening and educating others encouraged them to apply to the MSU Extension Master Gardener Program® where they submitted references, conducted an interview with a local MSU Extension staff member, and finished with the final step of attending this in-person onboarding training session that took place in Gladwin, Michigan.
During the onboarding, MSU EMGs learned about the MSU EMG Program and its mission to educate communities in four important areas. They also visited Gladwin’s Cedar Avenue Courtyard and ABC Gardens at the Sports Complex to learn about how to create a good project.
When surveyed at the end of onboarding, 100% of participants felt the training covered all the basics they needed—policy, reporting hours, connecting with projects—to be successful in the program.
