Graduate Student Rachel Drobnak Honored for Excellence in Science Outreach

PSM Graduate student awarded the MSU Graduate School’s Graduate Award in Science Outreach & Communication

Graduate student Rachel Drobnak (Sprunger Lab) has been awarded the MSU Graduate School’s Graduate Award in Science Outreach & Communication, which recognizes exemplary efforts to translate and communicate scholarly research to the general public. The award highlights Rachel’s commitment to making science accessible and relevant beyond academic boundaries, including: development of a prairie strip partial budget bulletin, leadership of an on-farm prairie strip research project, much mentoring, and multiple presentations at KBS Field Days, beginning with her first summer at the field station in 2021;

" I co-ran my first field day,
made my first research poster,
and learned how important
university research is to
benefit farmers and ecological landscapes."

Together, these efforts demonstrate a strong integration of rigorous research with practical communication aimed at farmers, land managers, and the wider public.

Rachel joins a strong tradition of outreach excellence at KBS. In 2023, colleague Corinn Rutkoski (Dr. Sarah Evans Lab) was also honored with this award, underscoring KBS’s continued leadership in science communication and public engagement.
