Test - Life with a Bernadoodle: what new owners should know 7/27/26
What to expect when welcoming a Bernadoodle into your home — from their boundless energy to their gentle nature and low-shedding coats. A practical introduction for new dog owners.
What is a Bernadoodle?
A Bernadoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. The combination produces a dog that is intelligent, affectionate, and typically low-shedding — making them a popular choice for families and individuals with mild pet allergies.
Energy and exercise
Bernadoodles are active dogs that need daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. Plan for at least 30 to 60 minutes of activity each day. Good options include:
- Walks or hikes on varied terrain
- Off-leash play in a fenced yard
- Fetch and tug-of-war games
- Swimming (many Bernadoodles love water)
Without adequate exercise, Bernadoodles may redirect their energy toward chewing furniture or other undesirable behaviors.
Grooming requirements
Most Bernadoodles have a wavy or curly coat that requires regular brushing to prevent matting. A grooming schedule should include:
- Brushing two to three times per week at minimum
- Professional grooming every eight to twelve weeks
- Regular nail trims and ear cleaning
Training and socialization
Bernadoodles are intelligent and eager to please, which makes training relatively straightforward when started early. Positive reinforcement methods work best. Early socialization with other dogs, children, and new environments helps develop a calm and confident adult dog.
Health considerations
Like all breeds, Bernadoodles can be prone to certain health conditions. Common concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia inherited from the Bernese side, as well as ear infections due to their floppy ears. Regular veterinary checkups and preventive care are essential.
