Maddy Dubelko is a graduate student working on a M.S. in Horticulture with a research focus on perennial and shrub roadside plantings. She is working with the MDOT (Michigan department of transportation) to determine what plants are successful along highways and how to best prepare those sites. She earned her B.S. in Horticulture and Landscape Design at Purdue University.
Why did you choose Horticulture as your advanced degree?
I chose Horticulture as my advanced degree because I wanted to gain more knowledge about how to best manage ornamental plantings. Through my previous internship at the Purdue University Arboretum, I became interested in how public green spaces can be improved both design wise, and plant selection wise.
What has been the best experience in grad school so far?
My best experience has presenting my research at landscape conferences. It feels so great to be able to show others what you have been working on and see what other people have been researching!
Why study Horticulture at MSU?
Studying horticulture gave me practical knowledge and skills that I can use in a variety of careers. Studying horticulture at MSU gave me more networking opportunities.
What are your future plans after you graduate?
Once I graduate I hope to work with a municipality or botanic garden to create plant inventories, and plan future green spaces for the public to enjoy.
