MassTimber@MSU and MI DNR Release Resource Guide on Supporting Michigan Mass Timber Momentum

EmailThe Michigan Mass Timber Resource Guide is dedicated to supporting this growing movement by providing architects, engineers, developers, policymakers, and enthusiasts with a centralized platform for accessing essential resources and information.
Mass timber is making it possible to build taller wood buildings, even skyscrapers, in ways that were not possible before – and a new online guide developed by MassTimber@MSU provides adopters of this construction method with resources to support their success.
The term “mass timber” refers to a variety of engineered wood products made by layering dimensional lumber to create strong panels, columns, and beams. Common types include glue-laminated timber (glulam), cross-laminated timber (CLT), and dowel- or nail-laminated timber (DLT and NLT). These products are engineered for strength and fire resistance, and because they are delivered as a prefabricated kit of parts, mass timber buildings can be constructed faster than other common structural systems.
Across Michigan, more than 75 mass timber projects are complete, in design or under construction. As demand for sustainable construction solutions continues to surge, so does mass timber momentum across the state.
Supported in part by funding from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, MassTimber@MSU created the Michigan Mass Timber Resource Guide – a new online hub supporting the growing mass timber movement. The guide provides architects, engineers, developers, manufacturers, policymakers, and enthusiasts with a central platform for essential mass timber resources and information.
“With dozens of mass timber buildings completed or in our pipeline, Michigan is already seeing significant mass timber momentum,” said Sandra Lupien, Director, MassTimber@MSU, a program at Michigan State University that leverages research, education, outreach, communications, policy, and partnerships to advance sustainable mass timber construction and manufacture in Michigan, the Great Lakes region and beyond. “The information in the Michigan Mass Timber Resource Guide provides information to help new – and even more experienced – project teams more easily, efficiently, and successfully implement mass timber to create beautiful, sustainable buildings that people love to live, work, study, and play in.”

“This new resource includes a wealth of practical information for those who are considering mass timber building projects,” said Shannon Lott, deputy director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “It provides a gateway to technical and practical information that can help grow this building technique in Michigan. We have been championing the creation of this guide for years. It is a huge accomplishment in support of DNR’s mass timber collaboration with MassTimber@MSU.”
