In 2022, the Digest of Education Statistics estimated that 15.8 million students were expected to attend a U.S. college or university – an increase of about 13.1 million since 2000.

College Board, a non-profit that aims to help connect students with “college success and opportunity,” notes that when it comes to the role extracurricular activities play in college admission decisions, exhibiting a commitment to a specific organization or activity over the long term, highlighting leadership skills, and noting activities that relate to the applicant’s study or career goals are all positives.

Michigan State University Extension 4-H is one such extracurricular activity that provides developmentally-appropriate programs and opportunities for youth throughout every stage of their precollege life. From 4-H clubs to camps, workshops or contests, 4-H is about helping youth thrive as they develop into confident and capable adults. Through hands-on projects, leadership opportunities, community service and positive relationships with others, youth in 4-H are able to discover their sparks, find a sense of belonging, and make a positive impact in their communities.

Many of Michigan 4-H’s statewide events are considered by MSU to be “precollege programs.” This means these programs are designed for pre-college aged youth and are coordinated and facilitated by MSU faculty/staff who provide content and intentionally expose young people to possible career paths and opportunities for educational study.

The youth who participate in these pre-college programs get to meet expert practitioners and faculty members, engage in higher-level thinking about communities and complex issues, and have the opportunity to explore possibilities for their future. A special $2,000 scholarship is offered to youth that participate in precollege programs at MSU such as 4-H Animal and Veterinary Science Camp, 4-H Capitol Experience, 4-H Exploration Days, 4-H Great Lakes & Natural Resources Camp and World Food Prize Michigan Youth Institute.

By taking part in Michigan 4-H precollege and youth development programs, youth not only build skills such as teamwork or problem-solving but also gain valuable experiences that can help strengthen their college applications. With opportunities to network with professionals, explore career paths, and even earn scholarships, Michigan 4-H helps young people step confidently into their future, becoming beyond ready for their next educational journey.
