MSU Announces 4-H Winners

Michigan's 4-H dairy judging team scored well at the 14th annual Pennsylvania All-American Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in mid September in Harrisburg, Pa.

The Michigan team placed 5th out of 18 nationwide, and one of the team's members, Kim Ackerman of North Adams, was the overall high scoring individual in the competition. She was also the top winner in the Jersey cattle judging division. Other team members included Angie Butler of Fowlerville, Tom Cook of Ubly, and Jayne Piepkow of Olivet.

To earn the top slots, the 4-H'ers had to judge 10 classes in front of dairy cattle and orally defend their placings in 3 classes in front of a panel of judges. Points were awarded for correctly placing and defending each class.

4-H members received ribbons, medals, and plaques for their accomplishments.

They qualified to compete in the national contest by placing among the top 15 individuals at the Michigan 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held at 4-H Dairy Days at Michigan State University in August. A practice judging contest was also held at the Michigan State Fair to prepare them for competition.

"We're very pleased with how well this year's team performed at the nationals," says Gale Baumgardner, Michigan 4-H youth dairy science specialist. "And we're also grateful for the support of the Michigan Animal Breeders' Co-Op, which enables us to send our outstanding Michigan 4-H'ers to compete on the national level."
