MSU experts testify before Michigan lawmakers on invasive pests and food security

In June, MSU entomologists Rufus Isaacs and Jackie Perkins provided expert testimony before joint Michigan House oversight committees focused on Public Health and Food Security and Homeland Security and Foreign Influence. Their presentation highlighted the risks posed by foreign crop pests and plant pathogens and the work being done to protect Michigan agriculture.

"It was a great opportunity to share with legislators some of the important work we do at MSU to combat invasive species," Perkins said. "This includes early detection efforts, monitoring networks across the state to track when and where new pests are showing up, and discovering new strategies for reducing invasive pest populations once they establish."

The testimony underscored the high cost of invasive species. A 2022 study estimated that biological invasions have caused more than $500 billion in damages and associated costs in the United States, demonstrating the significant economic impact these threats can have on agriculture, natural resources and communities.

Among the most pressing insect threats facing Michigan's fruit industry is spotted wing drosophila, according to Perkins. "Spotted wing drosophila remains a huge challenge for fruit growers, even more than a decade after establishing here," she said. "However, MSU entomologists and partners around the U.S. have done a lot of research, and we now can manage this pest much more effectively."

Another emerging concern is the spotted lanternfly, which has spread slowly compared with many invasive insects. "Spotted lanternfly is a new challenge, but the invasion has luckily been slow," Perkins said. "This has allowed us to be prepared and work with partner institutions and government agencies to have a coordinated response. It isn't causing economic damage in crops in Michigan yet, but we are ready to support growers if populations continue to grow."

The effects of invasive species ultimately reach far beyond the farm gate. "Invasive species can impact food production by either increasing the inputs growers need to utilize to protect their crop, or by reducing overall yields and availability of a particular crop, both of which can increase prices in the grocery store," Perkins said.
