MSU Team Takes Top Judging Honors

Michigan State University's dairy judging team took top honors in the North American International Livestock Exposition Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest in Kentucky in November.

The team accumulated the highest number of total points- 2036 out of a possible 2250.

Team members are:

  • Kelly Bristle of Ann Arbor, daughter of Stephen and Karen Bristle.
  • Jim Kraft of Trufant, son of Richard and Joan Kraft
  • Charles Koenn of Chelsea, son of Charles and Margot Koenn
  • Jeff Horning of Manchester, son of Earl and Diane Horning
  • Coach Clifford Jump, MSU

The team received 1st overall, 2nd in oral reasons, 2nd in Jersey, 4th in Guernsey, and 5th in Ayrshire.

Bristle was named high individual overall, 1st in oral reasons, 1st in Guernsey, Ayrshire and Jersey, and 5th in Brown Swiss. Koenn was named 9th in Holsteins and 10th in Ayrshire. Kraft was 6th in Jersey.

MSU competed against 14 universities, judging 10 classes of dairy cattle and giving 5 sets of oral reasons.

It is the first time that MSU has won the contest. Bristles, Koenns and Hornings are MMPA members.
