GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan State University officials have announced plans for a new biomedical research facility in Grand Rapids. More than 30 faculty and students are expected to visit Grand Rapids on Friday. University President Lou Anna K. Simon launched the first phase of the project this week, as faculty and students from the MSU Land Policy Institute and School of Planning, Design and Construction are scheduled to be conducting research on the proposed site in the coming weeks. Earlier in the summer, the MSU Board of Trustees authorized plans to move forward with planning for development of the 7.85 acres of Grand Rapids land the university bought in January of 2012. "We were pleased to acquire the downtown properties last year to accommodate the demands of our growing medical research program," President Simon said. "We are excited as we take this next step with students, researchers, and faculty engaging with local leaders and community partners to develop a model biosciences corridor in Grand Rapids." In addition to planning for the new facility, the students will reportedly be interviewing local leaders and looking at social and cultural factors that would help recruitand retain world-class researchers," the University said in a release. "Our team's role is to look at the community and MSU properties and figure out how we can design a high-class, model facility that satisfies researchers, administrators, and community partners," said Scott Witter, who leads MSU's Land Policy Institute and School of Planning, Design and Construction. "That includes looking at everything from sustainability to planning and zoning to technology." A report to the Board of Trustees is expected by the end of the year.
