MSU's Mitchell named SRA Fellow
Jade Mitchell, Ph.D., was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of risk analysis with the honor of SRA Fellow
The Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) was established in 1980 and is a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, scholarly, international society that provides an open forum for those who are interested in risk analysis. Risk analysis is a broad topic, and can be defined to include risk assessment, communication, management, characterization, and policy relating to risk in the context of concern to individuals, public and private organizations, and society.
The SRA recognizes outstanding contributions to the Society and to the scientific field of risk analysis through honors and awards. One such honor is the Fellow, which is awarded by a committee of SRA Past Presidents and approved by the SRA Executive Board. Fellows include all former Presidents of the Society and up to one percent of the Society members per year who are selected based upon substantial achievement in science or public policy relating to risk analysis and substantial service to the Society. Jade Mitchell, Ph.D., received the honor of Society for Risk Analysis Fellow in December 2025.
Jade Mitchell, Ph.D., is a professor and associate chair in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) and the evaluation of chemical and microbial stressors that affect human health through multiple exposure pathways, including water quality and food safety. She has demonstrated sustained leadership in interdisciplinary research and education, directing federally funded training programs for over a decade to prepare the next generation of risk scientists. Dr. Mitchell has also held multiple leadership roles within the Society for Risk Analysis, including service on specialty group committees, the Executive Board, and the Risk Analysis journal editorial board.
“I am incredibly grateful and honored to receive the distinction of SRA Fellow, particularly from an organization that has played such a pivotal role in my professional growth through its networks, training, and collegial community over the years.” said Mitchell. “This recognition of both my service and professional achievements within the Society is deeply meaningful.”
The SRA brings individuals and experts together in regional organizations that convene members locally, and it also includes specialty groups that enable members to meet with others in their respective disciplines. SRA includes nearly 2,000 members from academia, government, industry, consulting, and non-governmental organizations. This enables diverse, robust conversations on the risk analysis topics SRA covers.
“For decades, the Society for Risk Analysis has strengthened the foundations of risk science while translating those principles into practice across every sector that touches human and environmental well-being.” said Mitchell. “Through this work, the Society has made lasting contributions to how we understand risk, resilience, and the interconnected systems that define our world.”
