MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Position:The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (joint with the College of Engineering) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure system, assistant professor rank position in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. The position is 75% research and 25% teaching, and may begin as early as January 1, 2016. The focus should be an engineering approach to understanding and improving human interactions with food and food systems, such as fate of nutrients, toxins, allergens, or microbes in the human body, and their impact on individual and/or public health.

Responsibilities:This individual will conduct research focused on designing and modeling the fate of foods, microorganisms, and chemicals in humans as individuals and/or in populations. Emphasis could be on engineering analyses and modeling of various processes, such as digestive processes, the fate of probiotics, foodborne pathogens, bioavailability of nutrients, and/or the design of functional foods and processes to optimize health outcomes. The successful candidate will be expected to provide visionary leadership to the emerging field of food and human / animal health modeling by developing a robust, collaborative, externally-funded research program (e.g., NIH, NSF), advise graduate students, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses as well as course and curriculum development in biosystems engineering.

Qualifications:Applicants must have an earned degree in Biosystems/Biological Engineering, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with an earned doctorate in one of those or a related field, and show evidence of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate is expected to have strong communication skills. Postdoctoral research and teaching experience, evidence of scholarly activities, and a demonstrated ability to obtain competitive external grants in support of research and/or educational programs are desirable.
