New online nutrition class in American Sign Language
Eat Healthy Be Active in American Sign Language is a video-based nutrition class with live support as needed for SNAP-Ed participants.
Eat Healthy Be Active is a nutrition program taught by Michigan State University Extension throughout the state. Sandria Graham, community nutrition instructor based in Oakland County, teaches the class in American Sign Language. To extend her reach to deaf and hard of hearing audiences beyond southeast Michigan, she has launched an online option in American Sign Language that is video based.
The course is offered for eight weeks and allows users to watch the content on their own time. Sandria offers office hours to connect with participants live if they are able. The course also offers discussion boards for participants to ask questions and engage with each other.
Eat Healthy Be Active has six lessons. Each lesson contains video content and supporting handouts. The lessons are:
- Enjoy Healthy Food that Tastes Great
- Quick Healthy Meals and Snacks
- Eat Healthy on a Budget
- Tips for Losing Weight and Keeping It Off
- Making Healthy Eating Part of Your Lifestyle
- Physical Activity is Key to Living Well
