Michigan State University’s Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP), MSU Extension and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) will offer pesticide safety classes in English and Spanish at the 2026 Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable and Farm Market Expo (GLEXPO) on Dec. 10. Worker protection safety training required for certification will also be available. Educational sessions for pesticide applicators will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the program starts promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Morning session

8:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Check-in is from 8 to 8:30 a.m.

The morning session is a 4-hour review covering all chapters of the National Pesticide Applicators Certification Core Manual. It is designed to provide applicators with guidance on proper techniques for mixing, loading and applying pesticides safely. Two parallel sessions will be offered, one in English and one in Spanish.

This training will prepare participants for the MDARD restricted use pesticide (RUP) test, which will be administered in the afternoon. The morning session is mandatory for those planning to take the test.

Participants should read and study the Core Manual before attending the review. Copies may be ordered from the MSU Pesticide Safety Study Manual Site. County Extension offices may also have copies available. Visit MSU Extension's website to locate the county Extension office nearest to you. Please call ahead for availability.

Recertification opportunity

Attendees with commercial or private certified applicator certifications can earn four RUP credits by attending the morning session, which can be applied toward recertification.

Afternoon session

1 to 3 p.m. – MDARD RUP Test.

Following the morning training, attendees can take the RUP test. MDARD will begin the testing session at approximately 1 p.m. This is a critical step for those seeking certification to apply restricted use pesticides. The following exams can be taken in this session:

  • Private Core – English or Spanish
  • Commercial Core – English or Spanish
  • Fumigation Standard
  • Aerial Standard

There will be no commercial category tests.

Please note:

  • MDARD emphasizes that the certification process is not complete until applicators have submitted a completed license application and the application fee.
  • A check payable to “State of Michigan” is the only payment accepted for the applicator certification fee, which is $75 for commercial applicators and $50 for private applicators. Private applicator certification fees are waived for Military Veterans if a copy of their DD214 is provided.
  • No fees will be collected during the session. A postage paid envelope to send certification payment to MDARD is provided at the session. Cash or credit card payments are not accepted.
  • All certification and other information can be found at MDARD Pesticide Applicator Certification
