As civic engagement continues to evolve, the need for knowledgeable and proficient governance in public bodies and organizations becomes increasingly imperative. Michigan State University Extension’s Governing Essentials Series is an upcoming webinar series designed for local elected and appointed officials looking to sharpen their skills and promote good governance practices. Through four insightful sessions, the series aims to cultivate a basic understanding of transparent, ethical and effective leadership practices. The complete series is offered twice each year in the winter and fall.

Session topics

Session 1: Navigating the Michigan Open Meetings Act (OMA)

The foundation of transparent governance lies in the Michigan Open Meetings Act (OMA). This session will focus on the requirements of OMA, mandating elected and appointed boards to conduct meetings transparently and openly. Participants will also explore frequently asked questions.

2026 Dates: February 10 & September 15

Session 2: Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure

Parliamentary Procedure, based on Roberts’ Rules of Order, is the most widely used parliamentary authority. This session will focus on parliamentary principles, motions, debate and decorum during meetings. Participants will explore scenarios and practice skills.

2026 Dates: February 17 & September 22

Session 3: Components of Extraordinary Governance

This session brings the best ideas together for a thorough overview of board governance. Participants will learn how to apply these components to positively impact their communities.

2026 Dates: February 24 & September 29

Session 4: Ethical Public Service

This session explores the principles of ethical public service, emphasizing transparency and accountability in governance. Participants will learn practical strategies to navigate ethical challenges in decision-making and the effective use of bylaws and codes of conduct in board operations.

2026 Dates: March 3 & October 6

Registration for the webinars are $20 per session and can be taken individually or as the 4-part series for $60. For the series rate, participants must register for either the February or September series. 

Format: All sessions will be delivered via Zoom and recorded for registrants. 
Time: Noon to 1:00 p.m. (ET)
Credits Available: 1 Master Citizen Planner (MCP) credit per session
