Soil Savvy workshop helps gardeners build healthy soil

When we think about gardening, we often think about beautiful landscapes or bountiful produce. However, for those picture-perfect gardens to thrive, they require a healthy foundation. How much do you know about the health of your soil? A healthy soil is able to sustain life, ultimately nurturing not only plants but the humans, insects and animals that depend on those plants for many things, such as food, wellness and habitat—even the oxygen we breathe!
Healthy soil is the foundation of any successful garden. Improving soil health can seem like a bit of a mystery, but there are simple techniques we can follow to evaluate and ultimately improve the health of our soil. One very simple step is to get a soil test to learn about the condition of your soil and how to fulfill the nutrient needs of your plants.

Join Michigan State University Extension and Capital Area Master Gardeners on Aug. 15, 2026, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Lansing, Michigan, for a hands-on workshop designed to give practical, science-based insights into improving soil structure, boosting fertility and sustaining vibrant plant life. If possible, please bring soil from your own lawn or garden to evaluate during the workshop.
The workshop features two expert speakers from Michigan State University (MSU) Extension:
- Christina Curell, Cover Crops and Soil Health Educator
- Brent Crain, PhD, Consumer Horticulture Educator
