The North Central SARE Spanish resources page offers many helpful tools for Spanish-speaking farmers, families and educators. These materials teach people how to grow food in ways that protect the land and support strong communities. Sustainable agriculture means caring for the environment while also helping farms succeed over time.

Please contact Sarah Zeiler at szeiler@msu.edu if you would like to request print versions of any of the resources listed below:

What is sustainable agriculture?

One important resource is ¿Qué es la Agricultura Sostenible?. This guide explains the basic ideas of sustainable farming in simple language. It teaches that farming should protect soil, water and air while helping farmers earn a living. The guide also introduces topics like soil health, pest control and crop rotation. This is a great place for beginners to start learning.

Improving soil with cover crops

Another helpful resource is Cultivos de Cobertura para Rotaciones de Cultivos Sustentables. This guide explains how cover crops can improve soil health. Cover crops help stop erosion, add nutrients and keep the soil strong. The guide shows farmers how to use these crops as part of a planting plan, so their land stays healthy year after year.

Raising chickens and turkeys on pasture

The resource Avicultura Rentable: Criando Aves en Pasturas focuses on raising poultry outdoors. It shares real stories from farmers and gives tips on housing, feeding and caring for birds. This guide helps farmers raise animals in a natural way while still making a profit. It is especially helpful for small farms.

Sustainable pig farming

Another resource is Estrategias Económico-Ambientales en la Crianza de Cerdos. This guide teaches farmers how to raise pigs in ways that are both profitable and eco-friendly. It explains how small farms can stay independent while improving animal care and reducing environmental impact.

Learning through videos

The site also offers videos in Spanish about sustainable farming. These videos explain farming clearly and visually. They cover topics like soil health, grazing and cover crops. Watching these videos helps people better understand how to use these practices on their own farms.

Additional learning with ATTRA

Another helpful collection includes ATTRA publications in Spanish. These guides provide more detailed information about farming topics such as organic production, marketing and new business ideas. They are useful for farmers who want to learn more advanced skills and improve their operations.

A wide range of topics

The broader SARE Resources and Learning page offers information on many topics, including soil management, crop production, animal care, and farm business planning. These resources are based on real research and farmer experiences and have been tested and can be used in real life.

The Spanish resources from SARE provide simple, practical tools for learning about farming. From beginner guides to detailed manuals and videos, these resources address a wide range of needs. By offering information in Spanish, SARE helps more people care for the land, grow healthy food, and succeed in agriculture.

SARE has distributed $11.5 million to fund 333 grant projects in Michigan since 1988. The program supports an inclusive mix of farmers and does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity (including gender expression), sexual orientation, disability, age, marital status, family/parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, or political beliefs.
