The Michigan 4-H Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that supports the mission and vision of Michigan State University (MSU) Extension 4-H Youth Development. The foundation receives donations from individuals and organizations to support 4-H youth development activities and to train Michigan 4-H’s adult and older teen volunteers.

Nugent brings to the board more than 30 years of leadership experience, financial expertise and a strong commitment to agriculture and youth development. He currently serves as treasurer, chief financial officer and human resources director for Michigan Farm Bureau. Over the course of his career, Nugent has held several leadership roles, including manager of Member Services, director of the Information and Public Relations Division and director of Field Operations, where he served for 16 years. Nugent also leads the organization’s corporate social responsibility initiative focused on eradicating childhood hunger in Michigan.

A graduate of MSU, Nugent earned dual bachelor’s degrees in food systems, economics and management, and agricultural and natural resources communications. He later received his MBA from Western Michigan University. He has remained actively engaged with his alma mater, serving as president of the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association and as a board member of the Michigan Dairy Memorial Scholarship Fund.

An accomplished Kent County 4-H alumnus, Nugent has continued to give back to the program as founder and co-leader of the Milky Way 4-H Club, coach of the Kent County Dairy Quiz Bowl team and a volunteer in the Kent County 4-H Dairy Program. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the Michigan 4-H Emerald Clover Society in 2018.

“4-H provided a strong backbone of support for me as a young farm kid growing up in Kent County,” Nugent said. “Through 4-H, I developed friendships and a strong and vibrant network of people I continue to work with today. As my kids grew up, I knew they should have the same experience, so I became a 4-H leader to pay it forward to the next generation. 4-H truly contributed to my success both professionally and personally.”

Michigan 4-H Foundation trustees are volunteers who manage foundation policies and operations, and are community advocates for ongoing and increasing support for 4-H. They are also charged with overseeing the activities of foundation staff members and working on committees to facilitate foundation operations.
