Van Timmeren receives 2026 CANR Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award

Steve Van Timmeren, of the Department of Entomology, will receive the 2026 CANR Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award at the CANR Faculty and Staff Awards reception on May 6.

The CANR Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award recognizes a support staff member for outstanding performance in contributing to the research mission of Michigan State University and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional knowledge and skill in their field and provide critical support to faculty research efforts.

Van Timmeren, a research assistant in the Department of Entomology, has been a member of the CANR community since 2003. In his role, he supports a wide range of laboratory and field-based research activities, with a primary focus on two important pests: the spotted wing drosophila and blueberry stem gall wasp.

Colleagues describe Van Timmeren as an innovative and resourceful collaborator who thrives in complex research environments. One nominator noted that working under his guidance is “inspiring” and helps students and staff see entomology as a meaningful and viable career path.

Van Timmeren is known for his ability to assist with challenging experimental design, construct specialized enclosures for insect colonies and help researchers interpret results. His technical skill, problem-solving ability and deep understanding of insect research make him a trusted partner for faculty across the department.

In addition to his behind-the-scenes contributions, Van Timmeren is a clear and engaging communicator. He regularly presents to research and extension audiences, delivering talks that are accessible, insightful and well-received by growers and stakeholders.

According to one nominator, “He is driven and self-motivated, incredibly smart and innovative, and just the person you want to have in your corner.”

Through his expertise, mentorship and communication skills, Van Timmeren has made a lasting impact on entomology research at MSU and exemplifies the qualities recognized by the Excellence in Research Performance and Support Award.
