Rafael Auras, PhD
Rafael Auras is a Professor and the Amcor Endowed Chair in Packaging Sustainability at Michigan State University's School of Packaging, where he spearheads a dynamic research group comprised of enthusiastic undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students. Their primary focus revolves around investigating mass transfer phenomena in polymers, exploring the potential of biodegradable and compostable polymers, conducting life cycle assessments, studying packaging waste management, and developing sustainable packaging systems. With a track record of conducting research projects for Fortune 500 companies and leading government-sponsored initiatives, Rafael has established himself as an authority in his field. Rafael is regularly invited to deliver keynote speeches and presentations at prestigious national and international conferences. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications, including four books. Rafael earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the National University of Misiones in Argentina, an MS in Materials Science and Technology at the National University of San Martin in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Ph.D. in packaging at Michigan State University. He and his wife and two sons reside in Okemos, Michigan.

Course Description: This course provides an understanding of the effects of packaging on the environment, solid waste and pollution issues. Introduction to life cycle assessment (LCA) and determination of environmental footprint indicators using streamlined LCA.
PKG 825. Polymeric Packaging Materials
Course Description: Physical, mechanical and chemical properties of packaging polymers and multilayer structures; relationship between properties and performance of packaging materials and systems; processing of packaging plastics.
PKG 880. Life Cycle Assessment: Background, Principles, Calculations and Applications
Course Description: Determination of the environmental footprint of products and systems during their entire life-cycle using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology; introduction to the theory and application of LCA.
