In the Bonito Lab, Kelsey is studying microbial communities of former copper mining sites in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She is particularly interested in using high throughput sequencing and bioinformatics to determine which fungi and bacteria colonize these areas and how they interact with each other, their early successional plant hosts and the heavy metals still present in their environment.
