Biography

Dr. Yan “Susie” Liu is a faculty member in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University. Her research integrates microbial fermentation, algae cultivation, and biological processing to convert agricultural crops, food-processing residues, lignocellulosic materials, and waste carbon dioxide into value-added products. Her scholarly program focuses on developing sustainable bioprocesses for food and feed ingredients, bioenergy, biopolymers, and agricultural pest management. She also investigates how fermented plant proteins, microbial metabolites, probiotics, and functional lipids can improve human, animal, and plant health.

Research Interests

  • Fermentation technologies for improving soybean and pulse-crop value
  • Sustainable production of functional food and animal-feed ingredients
  • Algal cultivation and biomass utilization for agriculture, feed, and biodegradable materials
  • Biological approaches to soil health, plant growth, and pathogen management
  • Conversion of agricultural residues and waste streams into marketable bioproducts
